The Golden Circle and the Secret Lagoon
This classic drive begins with a visit to Thingvellir, a National Park and site of the World’s oldest parliament. Thingvellir National park is on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2004. The entrance to Thingvellir is a walk through the Almannagjá gorge, visible evidence of plate tectonic activity on the European-American fault-line which still today is pushing the two continents apart and creating Iceland, geology’s youngest country. From the tectonic plates, we will drive to the thermal landscape around iconic Geysir with the erupting hot springs, where Strokkur blows up every 7-10 minutes or so. It´s ideal to enjoy the scenery by Geyser for 30 minutes or so. After Geyser we move onwards to the rainbow-ridged waterfall Gullfoss one of Europe’s most powerful waterfalls. After Gullfoss, it´s ideal to have a late lunch at Fridheimar Geo greenhouses. Then not to forget a relaxing geothermal bath at the secret lagoon, really the perfect way to end the day before arriving at your hotel. Stay the night close to Vik.
The South Coast towards the glacier lagoon
This day is all about the stunning south coast with glacier volcanoes. Beautiful waterfalls, like the impressive Seljalandsfoss, where the brave can walk behind the cascade. On route, we will have lunch at some cozy little restaurant. Stop at Vik, a little village where perhaps you can look at some Icelandic wool sweaters. You will have the chance to drive through one of the largest lava fields in the world with amazing formations and colors and hopefully, see some green moss. Sights like Skaftafell and Svinafellsjokull glacier are ideal for a photo or two and you will see both locations. In the late afternoon, we arrive at the glacier lagoon and stay at a nearby hotel. In the evening we will be on the lookout for the Northern lights. If you stay at either Hotel Hali or Guesthouse Gerdi it´s possible to see glacier lagoon both in afternoon and then again in the morning.
Ice cave explorer
The last day of this wonderful adventure is also full of amazing locations. We start the day with a visit to the unique and natural Ice caves, this adventure is simply unique. Then on the route towards Reykjavik along the south coast to Reynisfjara beach. The south with its beautiful coastline and spectacular rock formations, this is where you have the black volcano beaches of the south, miles, and miles of black beach with amazing panoramic views. Then to the powerful waterfall Skógafoss that carries water from two glacier volcano’s, Eyjafjallajokull and Myrdalsjokull. There is this little museum that shows a film about the eruption that started in Eyjafjallajokull in 2010, I do recommend that we stop there, about 20 minutes, but very nice to see how powerful the eruption was. Arrival at your hotel in Reykjavik in the afternoon.
