Day 1: The wonders of Snafellsnes
Snæfellsnes glacier is one of the energy centers of the earth.
Poets, writers and artists have often come to the glaciers in search of
inspiration and energy.
Amongst those are Iceland´s Noble Price winner Halldór Laxnes and
Jules Verne, Journey to the centre of the Earth.
This tour takes us to Ytri Tunga where a seal colony can be found.
Then further on to Arnarstapi where we take a 1 hour hike along the
cliffs to Hellnar where the bird life is plentiful and amazing rock
formations to look at, and to feal the sea breeze and breath in the
fresh air is some thing quite unforgettable.
Then we head on to Dritvík bay, an old fishing bay,
Skarðsvík bay Golden Sand and to Saxhóll reed Basaltic Crater.
Snæfellsnes with its unique beauty and energy will not leave you
untouched. Stay the night at Hotel Hellnar or similar.
Day 2. Into the glacier
Deep freeze inside a glacier…..
Located in the western part of Langjokull (Long Glacier), and 1,260
meters above sea level, the ice cave stretches deep underground
giving visitors the chance to see ice that’s been forming over
centuries. Stepping inside the cave is daunting at first.
Visitors strap crampons onto their shoes to navigate the slippery and
slushy floor. Jagged cuts in the ice turn smooth and the colors of the
ice change as visitors get deeper, changing from a cloudy white to
shocking deep blues. Visitors are treated to views of gaping crevices
as they run their fingers along the walls of the tunnel.
You will also visit the low-lands of the west with beautiful lava
cascades Hraunfossar and amazing scenery before and after the deep
freeze inside the glacier. The Super truck adventure is part of the
tour since no normal vehicle can drive up the glacier to the entrance,
so you will need to change vehicle for part of the day for an added
adventure. Stay the night at Hotel Glymur.
Day 3. The Golden Circle and the Secret lagoon
This classic drive begins with a visit to Thingvellir, a National Park
and site of the World’s oldest parliament. Thingvellir National park is
on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2004. The entrance to
Thingvellir is a walk through the Almannagjá gorge, visible evidence
of plate tectonic activity on the European-American fault-line which
still today is pushing the two continents apart and creating Iceland,
geology’s youngest country. From the tectonic plates we will drive to
the thermal landscape around iconic Geysir with the erupting hot
springs, where Strokkur blows up every 7-10 minutes or so. It´s ideal
to enjoy the scenery by Geyser for 30 minutes or so. After Geyser we
move onwards to the rainbow-ridged waterfall Gullfoss one of
Europe’s most powerful waterfalls. After Gullfoss it´s ideal to have a
late lunch at Fridheimar. After the greenhouses you will visit the
secret lagoon for a relaxing natural geo-thermal bath.
Stay the night at hotel Stracta or similar.
Day 4. The stunning south Coast towards the glacier lagoon
This day is all about the south coast with glacier volcano’s.
Beautiful water falls, like the impressive Seljalandsfoss, where the
brave can walk behind the cascade. On route we will have lunch at
some cozy little restaurant. Stop at Vik, a little village where perhaps
you can look at some Icelandic wool sweaters.
You will have the chance to drive through one of the largest lava
fields in the world with amazing formations and colors and hopefully
see some green moss. Sights like Skaftafell and Svinafellsjokull
glacier are ideal for a photo or two and you will see both locations. In
the late afternoon we arrive at the glacier lagoon and stay at a nearby
hotel. In the evening we will be on the lookout for the Northern lights
Stay the night at Fosshotel glacier lagoon.
Day 5. Jokulsarlon and the route back to Reykjavik.
The last day of this wonderful adventure is also full of amazing
locations. We head towards Reykjavik along the south coast to
Dyrhólaey natural reserve with it´s beautiful coast-line and
spectacular rock formations, this is where you have the black volcano
beaches of the south, miles and miles of black beach with and
amazing panoramic views.
Then to the powerful waterfall Skógafoss that carries water from two
glacier volcano’s, Eyjafjallajokull and Myrdalsjokull. There is this
little museum that shows a film about the eruption that started in
Eyjafjallajokull in 2010, I do recommend that we stop there, about 20
minutes, but very nice to see how powerful the eruption was.
Stay the night at Hotel Selfoss.
Day 6. Reykjanes peninsula & The Blue lagoon
Reykjanes is almost perfect Iceland, if it had a glacier, we would
really not have to go anywhere else scenery wise. The route towards
the Blue lagoon is simply amazing scenery with lunar like landscape
and geothermal activity. This part of Iceland is right on the tectonic
plates that explains the activity in the ground. Visit Gunnuhver with
bubbling mud-pots and the Lake Kleifarvatn before you reach the
At the Blue lagoon you will enjoy a couple of hours soaking in the
surreal landscape of the Bluest of lagoons.
This day is ideal to start at around lunch time or you can enjoy lunch
at the Blue lagoon and then do the Reykjanes peninsula drive after
the Blue lagoon. Now you are back in Reykjavik
