Day 1. The Golden Circle and the South coast
This classic drive begins with a visit to Thingvellir, a National Park and UNESCO sight. The entrance to Thingvellir is a walk through the Almannagjá gorge, visible evidence of plate tectonic activity on the European-American fault-line which still today is pushing the two continents apart and creating Iceland, geology’s youngest country. From the tectonic plates we will drive to the thermal landscape around iconic Geysir with the erupting hot springs, where Strokkur blows up every 7-10 minutes or so. It´s ideal to enjoy the scenery by Geyser for 30 minutes or so. After Geyser we move onwards to the
rainbow-ridged waterfall Gullfoss one of Europe’s most powerful waterfalls. After Gullfoss the tour takes you to the South coast and the magical waterfall Seljalandsfoss, where you have the chance to walk behind the cascade giving you an unique view point then onto
the powerful Skogafossevening . Stay the night in Vik area.
In the evening we will be on the lookout for the Northern lights.
Day 2. South coast & Glacier hike
The first hightlight of the day is the pectacular Reynisfjara – Black volcano beaches with the beautiful lava columns.
Towards the glacier lagoon you will have the chance to drive through one of the largest lava fields in the world with amazing formations and colors and hopefully see some green moss. Sights like Skaftafell and Svinafellsjokull glacier are ideal for a photo or two and you will
see both locations. A glacier hike on Svinafellsjokull with all the gear needed is for sure a memory that you will keep for a long time. The glacier hike takes approx.. 3 hours. In the late afternoon we arrive at the glacier lagoon Jokulsarlon and the beautiful diamond beach. Stay the night in Hofn area. In the evening we will be on the lookout for the Northern lights
Day 3: The Fjords of the East
After a good breakfast the tour continues towards Myvatnsveit.
First we will drive the many Fjords of the east with some spectacular sights and small villages. This route is like no other were you will drive accompanied by Europe’s largest glacier Vatnajokull. Stop at
Djupivogur an traditional small fishing village. There is then an
invigorating hike to Hengifoss, Iceland’s second highest waterfall (128 m), we will also see the towering Litlanesfoss waterfall, the cascade is framed by giant hexagonal basalt columns. The hike takes about three hours in total. You will see a beautiful gorge where the layers from volcanic eruptions in ancient times can be seen in the
colorful rock face. Following our hike we travel to Egilsstaðir, the
night will be spent in a country hotel in the area. In the evening we will be on the lookout for the Northern lights
Day 4: Towards magical Myvatnsveit
This day is all about this unique area and we start with Dettifoss
waterfall, Europe’s most powerful waterfall. Then onto Bubbling mud flats, volcanic craters, newborn lava fields, and grassy shoals teeming with waterfowl are among the sights of the striking Lake
Myvatn region, one of the most geologically active and stunningly beautiful areas in Iceland. What is better then to relax for a while at
Myvatn Nature Baths, northern Iceland’s answer to the Blue Lagoon, Myvatnsveit is an surreal adventure world and so much beauty for the eye. Then the tour continues to Akureyri capital of the north. On route a stop at the magical Godfoss waterfall. Stay the night at a cozy
country hotel close to Akureyri.
In the evening we will be on the lookout for the Northern lights
Day 5: The beautiful North
In the morning you will have the opportunity to explore Akureyri, the Capital of the North. This very interesting and charming town is situated right in the heart of the mesmeric scenery of Eyjafjörður (the
Island Fjord). Then it is off to Dalvík for your whale watching tour. During the 3-hour sail trip you can expect to spot humpback whales,
white-beaked dolphins, minke whales, and sometimes even a
majestic blue whale. You will also get the chance to try your luck at sea angling. When we step ashore, we drive to Siglufjörður, a charming fishing village with a rich history before continuing
around Tröllaskagi (the Troll Peninsula). The characterful small villages on this peninsula will really give you a good insight into how life was/is lived in the remote Icelandic villages. Our drive will take us through some thriving agricultural areas on our way to Bifröst, a small university centered community. Your accommodation for the
night will be at a small hotel in Bifröst. In the evening we will be on the lookout for the Northern lights
Day 6: The Wild West
On this, our final day, we will find ourselves in West Iceland – an area which Lonely Planet voted as one of the best destinations in 2016.
Borgarfjörður has many splendid sights and we will focus on
these today. We stop at Deildartunguhver hot spring, the legendary waterfall, Barnafoss, (the Children´s Waterfall), and
the Hraunfossarcascade, the atmospheric very low and wide falls where the water emerges, literally straight out of the lava field. Next on the agenda is the historic and picturesque site of Reykholt, home
to Snorri Sturluson, the Icelandic historian, lawyer, politician, poet and the author of some Icelandic Sagas. See Snorralaug, Snorri´s pool,
dabble your fingers and feel the temperature of the water in the place where Snorri is likely to have bathed! We will drive around scenic fjord, Hvalfjörður (Whale Fjord), on our way to back Reykjavík. We expect to arrive in the city around 5 – 6 pm.
